Since a lot of EVOCATI members are in the early level 30's i thought I post a guide for this zone I partially used myself to quest and level in an effcient way. Take advantage of it if you want to :-). I took it from one of my favourite WoW websites Allakhazam. The only thing I did about it was some serious lay-out editing because that was pretty terrible :-)
Stranglethorn Vale Guide - Getting started
Made by Azuarc, take from wow.allakhazam.com
Stranglethorn is one of the largest zones in the game, number of quests, level range. You can start on the zone at level 30 and not be done the majority of quests before 42. Because of this, it is important to employ good quest planning and discipline in doing as much as possible in 1 trip.
This guide assumes a few things. First, it assumes you will be focusing on nothing but SV while you are there. As such, you need to clear out your quest log. Finish up those Gnomeregan and Duskwood quests and abandon anything you know you aren't going to finish. You need the space in your log. Also, it assumes you will mostly solo or partner. You will need groups, and a partner is highly recommended throughout. You might get half the XP per kill, but it's far safer, in a zone where creatures can come out of the woodwork in packs. Finally, this is written from an Alliance slant. That said, if you are at least level 30, you can get started. If you are at least 32, you can get started on Stranglethorn itself. Wait, what? You don't start Stranglethorn in Stranglethorn. If you really intend on doing Stranglethorn in earnest, and you're only level 30, the first place you want to go is on a boat to Kalimdor to run down to Thousand Needles.
Phase0: Shimmering Flats (lvl 30)
The far south end of Thousand Needles is a very white open area called Shimmering Flats. In the center of it is a racetrack from where the quests in this zone originate. Coming from Theramore, you might consider getting the Highperch Venom quest in the inn, and there is a journal on the ground at the base of the Great Lift that starts a quest heading toward the griffin point near Feralas. If you need or want the experience, by all means do those quests. But the quests you want for Stranglethorn are in the racetrack, and the griffin point you care about is south of Gadgetzan, which is actually in the next zone over. There are initially 5 racetrack quests, and they essentially involve the same thing: running around killing. The creatures you need have a camp somewhere, but you can find them stray if you so desire. I recommend you start west, where scorpions are, rotate clockwise around the outer edges. Don't go out of your way to kill basilisks; those kills seem to come on their own. Pick up items for Rocket Car Parts as you go though.
When you finish all 5 and return to the track, you will get new quests. The dwarf and goblin both give you a quest to Ratchet. The gnomes give you two quests 1 to the Badlands, and 1 to the Vile Reef in SV! Go to Ratchet for those 2 quests, set your HS there, and return. Kravel will give you another quest. Both of these quest lines send you to Booty Bay however, which is the city for SV. Use your HS to Ratchet, take the boat to Booty Bay. Reset HS there and pick up every quest you can. Then run up the road be careful, it isn't completely safe until you cross the river for the last time. Where the road bends east to Duskwood, it also forks west. Take the left fork to the rebel camp. There should be three quests there. Now double back to the first river crossing, and as soon as you cross it, stop and turn right. To the west, along the river bank, just out of sight, is Nesingwary's Expedition, also known as the hunter camp. Don't get the quests for the journal, but do get the other quests there. Now you are ready to begin.
Phase 0 quests:
Hardened Shells,Salt Flat Venom,Rocket Car Parts,A Bump in the Road,Load Lightening,Wharfmaster Dizzywig/Parts for Kravel,Goblin Sponsorship 1-2,Delivery to the Gnomes,The Haunted Isle,Welcome to the Jungle If you are level 32, your starting quest log should include: Tiger Mastery,Supplies to Private Thorsen,Supply and Demand,Panther Mastery, Investigate the Camp (completed), The Second Rebellion, Bad Medicine, Raptor Mastery, Bloodscalp Ears, Singing Blue Shards, Hostile Takeover, Krazek' s Cookery, The Stone of the Tides,Scaring Shaky,Encrusted Tail Fins(TN), Dream Dust in the Swamp (TN to SoS), Goblin Sponsorship 3(TN),Martek the Exiled (TN to Badlands)
Phase1 Kurzen's Camp (lvl 32)
You should be at the hunter camp right now. Patrol the river to the west until you hit mountains, looking for River Crocolisks. There are 2 spawns that are across the river also. If somebody is camping already, do this later. You've probably already noticed that the young tigers are here. As an aside, there are 3 sets of mastery quests: tigers, panthers, raptors. Each of these involves killing 4 phases of animals, which for simplicity I'm going to refer to as babies, normals, elders, and then finally a boss. Kill baby tigers and get normal tiger quest. Then return to the road, head north. Private Thorsen should be on the right side of the road before you get to the rebel camp. You might have already turned in the quest with him. Do it now if you haven't, and then go off the road to the east. You'll find baby panthers in this area. Fight your way east and you reach a road. You might see the goblin Venture Co. south, but this isn't your goal. There are normal tigers in the area you should kill. If you're feeling daring, you can even venture onto the ridge to the east and look for basilisks. The purpose in coming this way, however, is north to Kurzen's Compound. This area is not easy for single level 32s. Stick to isolated spawns as best you can, especially where the medicine men concerned. Kill 15 jungle fighters and collect 7 jungle remedies from the medicine men. The extract is in crates you can find in 2 spots in the camp. Don't go near the tower, the tiger cages, or the cave in the north. Those are for later. When you're finished, return to the rebel camp to complete those 2 quests, and then back to hunter camp. If you have a group, go ahead and return for Special Forces, but it is assumed you'll tackle this later.
Phase 1 quests:
Supply and Demand (completed, but not turned in), Tiger Mastery 1-2, Supplies to Private Thorsen, Panther Mastery 1, The Second Rebellion, Bad Medicine
Phase 2 Bloodscalps (level 33)
This will take a while to do. Trolls live in two parts of Stranglethorn. The Skullsplitters are much further to the south. The Bloodscalps however live in the northwest part of the vale, and should be your next objective. There are two quests you have directly concerning them and several others nearby. Try to get a partner or even a group for the start of this section. Leave hunter camp west. When you reach end of river bank, go south up the ridge into an area where normal panthers and the odd tiger live. Get your panther kills, note the big ramp that leads to troll city. That's your objective. Fight your way straight back to where the slope down is. As the slope dog-legs, you want to follow it around and back up. At the top of the hill, as you turn left, there should be a large stone tablet in front of you amidst 5 or so trolls. Fight your way to it, and search it for the Fourth Troll Legend. This is the hardest of the four to get. Return to the top of the slope that led you into this area, and hug the south wall of it, on the south side this time. The last room to the west contains the Third Troll Legend. Leave that room due south, climbing over the hills, and you should see a large nest baby raptors. If your group has stuck with you, go down to the shore and follow it south until you see troll ruins just inland from the beach. This is where you will find the First Troll Legend. There's almost always somebody clearing this area, but if you are solo at this point and there's a full spawn, ignore for now. Swim straight out to sea, into Vile Reef. There is a ruined city underwater, guarded by elite murlocs. They drop encrusted tail fins, but you can get those elsewhere, and you can snag the last legend without fighting them. Go to the extreme north edge of the ruins and look down; you should see the tablet on the outside of the walls. Carefully swim down to it and inspect it before something jumps you. After you acquire the Second Troll Legend, swim north to the large island on the map. It's covered in water elementals, but don't worry about fighting them. Just set foot on the island until you get the objective complete message. Swim back to the ruins where the first legend is. Grab the first legend if you didn't before, and work your way around the area to the east. The normal raptors are to the south of here, but unfortunately you don't have the quest yet. So thread between them and head toward what looks like a small lake or maybe just a pond on your map. In fact, it's the home of a village of non-elite murlocs, and they will drop an encrusted tail fin on every kill. Carefully single pull the wanderers north of the pond and thank them for their fins; for murlocs, these guys are actually fairly easy. Exit north and a little east and you should stumble into elder tigers and then a random camp of trolls. Use these to get your kills for Tiger Mastery 3 and to finish Bloodscalp Ears, and then travel north to the hunter camp, and on to the rebel camp, and finally Booty Bay for quest turn-ins.
Phase 2 quests:
Panther Mastery 2,Kurzen's Mystery,Raptor Mastery 1,Stone of the Tides, Encrusted Tail Fins,Tiger Mastery 3,Bloodscalp Ears
Phase 3 Venture Co. (lvl 34)
Lake Nezrifiti is the large body of water where the river bends and turns back to the west. It?s also the site of Venture Co.?s base in this zone, and this is where you need to go next. Expect a lot of senseless violence here. The geologists that drop the tumbled crystals are often heavily camped, and don't have a great drop rate. This is your central objective here, though you have 4 other things you can do meanwhile. First is to do laps around the lake looking for snapjaw crocos. Second is try to get a partner and fight way up the oil rig to Foreman Cozzle for the key to the chest in the house. Third is to go to the road, cross it, and waiting for elder panthers to attack you. Fourth is go northeast of goblins to where easy basilisks live. You will probably do close to an entire level on mob XP alone which are by far the most time-consuming. By the time you are done here, you will probably have over half the Green Hills pages. If you are eager to get the Olman Sewer or to simply be done, you may want to buy the rest from other players while you are in Booty Bay. If you are patient, there will be plenty more opportunities to find humanoid creatures, but this is your choice. I?m going to say get it done with now.
Phase 3 quests:
Hostile Takeover,Goblin Sponsorship 3,Some Assembly Required,Panther Mastery 3,Chapter 1+2+3+4,Green Hills of Stranglethorn
Phase 4 Clean-up (lvl 35)
It's time to finish the quests you have in the northern part of the zone. Go back to Kurzen's camp and work on Special Forces. The guys you want are in the cave, but not far within it. There is a very small spawn area to work with. When you finish it, see if you can get a group with other people working their way in to kill Kurzen himself. Leave the camp south, and stay along east wall. This is 3rd opportunity to work on the couple of spawns here of basilisks. As you continue south, past snake-temple thing, you notice a small hill on the map. At far base of the hill is Bhag'thera area. Isolate Bhag'thera before you fight him. Return to road and head for western shore. Get there however you can, and try to find the ruins for the first troll legend. Remember those raptors you didn't have the quest for earlier? Swim to the Haunted Isle next and beat up on some water elementals. Return to shore to the northeast, scout the crocos to see if you can find an elder salthingyer croc. If not, kill all and see if 1 spawns. Once you have your hide for Excelsior, go north end of the beach and find another cluster basilisks. It's time to finish the quest now. After you get shards, come south until you can work your way back in-land. There is a small hilltop you need to find that is difficult to describe the exact location of. It's northwest of the 1st legend, southwest the 3rd and 4th, due north of the murlocs, near lot of normal/elder tigers. If you climb up the hilltop, a flat round hilltop, you understand why you were looking there's the tiger Sin'Dali. If she isn't there, wait for respawn. Hunters camp is north of Sin'Dali's hill.
Phase 4 quests:
Special Forces,Colonel Kurzen,Panther Mastery 4,Raptor Mastery 2,Water Elementals,Excelsior,Singing Crystal Shards,Tiger Mastery 4
Phase 5: Travel Abroad (lvl 35-36)
Chances are you have now finished all the yellow quests that take place within Stranglethorn, and need to go traveling. Have fun, be merry, go do whatever you want, but here are the quests on your log that are points to address:
- Magical Analysis sends you to Dalaran in the northwest corner of Alterac Mountains. Go to Southshore, grab a few quests to do from there, and head north. The person you need is at the far south end of Dalaran, which is the big pink dome right on the edge of the lake. This is the one quest you must do that leads out-of-zone, because the quest line continues on.
- Favor for Krazek will send you to a cave in the east wall of Arathi Highlands. There is a Southshore quest you can do along the way. In Arathi, you might consider heading to the north wall and looking for the crystal that starts the Myzrael quest, since when you head into Drywhisker Gulch for the bloodstone ore, you'll get the motes for that quest from the kobolds that live there. This is all assuming that you, or someone you play with, is a miner. If not, you may be just as well off simply buying the ore out of the auction channel.
-Martek the Exiled takes place due south of the entrance into the Badlands, about halfway down latitudinally (sp). There?s actually very little reason to care about this quest unless you are going to get started on the Badlands. However, there is a goblin next to Martek that has a quest to collect Blue Pearls from the Vile Reef that you might consider getting. Or don't you can get the pearls without having the quest.
-Dream Dust in the Swamp takes place in Swamp of Sorrows, right by the entrance to the zone. The whelplings live in a very small area in the southwest corner of the map. If you get the quest there for the Lost Supplies, you might consider going back to Darkshire for the other quest to run to Nethergarde Keep. It's a pretty easy run, despite going into the Blasted Lands. After doing Dream Dust, you will have two quests that send you back to the Shimmering Flats. There will be another return eventually, but no reason to wait for these quests to go gray.
Phase 5 quests:
Magical Analysis (and Alterac quests),Favor for Krazek (and Arathi quests),Dream Dust in the Swamp (and Swamp of Sorrows quests),Goblin Sponsorship 4
Intermission
You've done nearly everything in the northern half of the zone. Everything you could, really, except the stone of the tides and the last raptor masteries. If phase 5 was no indication to you, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE FOR A WHILE! I don't mean hunker down and settle into all the quests in the Badlands, but if you had any interest in doing Scarlet Monastery, you might try now. If you had any other quests floating around you wanted to do for whatever reason, go attend to them. Get yourself out of Stranglethorn for a little while as a reprieve. You'll want a couple more levels before moving on anyway, since not all the quests you want to do will be open. You'll notice that the quests hereafter have a different flavor. For one thing, they're all much closer to Booty Bay, and higher in level as well. For another, they seem to be fewer in number and higher in concentrated amount of work, except for those quests that are as simple as ?go and fetch a ground spawn. Due to the way they are spread out, the remainder of the guide is split into short succinct phases. Some of them could be combined, but I don?t really see the point. Do 2 at once if you want to be an overachiever.
Phase 6: Zanzil (lvl 37)
The first thing you need to do is check all of Booty Bay for new quests. There should be no need to check the two northern camps; they shouldn't have anything new. Where you begin again in earnest is not on any of these new quests though; it's on your last remaining quest from the original list. As you leave Booty Bay and take the road north, chances are you've been jumped by the Elder Mistvale Gorillas once or twice. Now you fight back. Save the teeth. Take some of their giblets to Shaky in BB, and then back to MacKinley, and he'll tell you about some people in the Zanzil camps that owe him. Time for some more payback. Make sure you talk to Crank Fizzlebub before you leave town about his quest. You've undoubtedly been stoned mercilessly by Zanzil Hunters at some point in the past. Head for their camp, and bring a friend. Fight your way into the ruins out by the arena and look for Maury and Jon-Jon. Take your time so you can collect mixtures, but you don't need to finish yet, because Chucky isn?t here. Leave the Zanzil ruins south, and take the first turn off the road to the east that you can, before you reach the basilisk cave. When you approach the eastern shore, there should be another set of ruins before you with more Zanzil zombies, nagas, and other fine fellows. Chucky Ten Thumbs is among them, toward the left side, hiding behind a wall. Finish up your Zanzil mixtures and head back to town.
Phase 6 quests:
Scaring Shaky, Return to MacKinley, Voodoo Dues, Zanzil's Secret, A Fool's Stout
Phase 7: More Trolls (lvl 37)
If you are not level 37, do the next phase first. You should have a quest in your log for this section called Skullsplitter Tusks, and strangely it is not available until level 37.
Run back up the road, past the Zanzil camp, but stop before you reach Venture Co. There are troll ruins that lie off to the east, inhabited by the Skullsplitter tribe. Not only does the mage trainer in Booty Bay want their tusks, there was a quest from the rebel camp to collect fetishes from their mystics.
Fact #1: about these two quests: the drop rates are poor, and you probably don't want to do the quests alone, so expect to do a lot of killing for the quest items.
Fact #2: there is absolutely no reason to go into the main city part of the ruins up in the hills. The path leading up to it is a great source of mystics for getting the fetishes, but don?t bother going past the front door.
Fact #3: there are a lot of three-man patrols in the area. Watch your back.
Phase 7 quests:
Troll Witchery,Skullsplitter Tusks
Phase 8: The West Coast (lvl 38)
There is an opposing pirate force in Stranglethorn Vale, and they aren't very nice. They are called the Bloodsail Buccaneers, and there?s a goblin on the first floor of Booty Bay that?s worried about them. He tells you to check the cove where Pretty Boy Duncan lives. You know who he is, right. Now go find Catelyn the Blade in the middle level of the inn. She'll tell you. While you're at it, ask Privateer Bloads about the nagas up the coast.
Leave town with a couple friends, and the moment you leave the tunnel, stop. Turn left. Before the graveyard. This narrow passageway is your path for this trek. Carefully fight your way into the cove. The mages will tear you apart, and you don't have much of a prayer against two, so don?t do anything rash. Then again, you can practically resurrect yourself from inside the graveyard if you die here. Down by the shore is a lifeboat with Pretty Boy Duncan standing nearby. Kill him. Then scout around for a piece of paper you can read. Go back to town to talk to Catelyn. Now head up the coast to the nagas. You can either swim out and around the bloodsail camp, or come in-land and take the road to the first possible exit to the west. Either way, the nagas are tough customers, so I hope you aren't soloing. 39+ mobs are a real pain to kill. There are a lot more nagas than there seem to be, if you explore the area carefully, but there are also a lot of people camping them, and you'll need to kill a lot to get the akiris reeds you need.
Once you've had your fill of nagas, follow the coastline north again, and look for raptors on the beach. These are the elder raptors you know, the hard kind. Did you forget about the hunter's camp quests? Remember this area. Further on up the coast, past Grom'gol, is the Haunted Isle and the Altar of the Tides. Catelyn was kind enough to let you borrow her blade, so don?t keep her waiting too long. You'll need your groupmates for this quest too, so don't ditch them prematurely.
Travel to the hunter's camp to turn in the raptor quest, and return to the area where you killed them. Tethis roams in the area north of the Arena. Kill him for Nesingwary and head back, before using your HS to warp back to Booty Bay and complete the other quests.
Phase 8 quests:
Ansirem's Key,Pretty Boy Duncan,The Curse of the Tides,The Bloodsail Buccaneers 1-2,Raptor Mastery 3-4
Phase 9 The South Coast (lvl 39)
After finishing the first leg of Buccaneers, two new quests open up. Deeg at the top of the inn has Up to Snuff, and Dizzy on the top level by the entrance asks you to Keep an Eye Out. If you leave town and immediately head east to the water, you will find more Bloodsails along the path and on the beach to the south. The charts and orders for the second quest can be found in the camps there as ground spawns. Snuff and Dizzy's Eye are random drops from the buccaneers, but don't camp the pirates once you finish the second Buccaneers quest since you can get them on the last leg of Buccaneers. Instead, get a group and get started on the final quest to kill the captains on the ships. You'll need a good group for this, as there are a lot of tougher mobs, and it's easy to wipe even when you know what you are doing. Look for the ground spawn item "Cortello's Riddle" on the ships, which starts a quest. Before your group breaks up, take them back to the shore and go north past the pirates to kill the giant there for Captain's Chest. There are also bottles along the beach here for a quest MUCH higher in level, that takes place on the large island in the southeast. You won't be doing that any time soon.
Phase 9 quests:
The Bloodsail Buccaneers 3-4,Up To Snuff,Keep An Eye Out,The Captain's Chest
Phase 10 - The Heart of Stranglethorn (lvl 40)
There are only a few quests left, and it's easy enough to do them in one pass with a group, as you slowly march upward. Begin with Stranglethorn Fever, near where you were killing the gorillas for Scaring Shaky.
The Witch Doctor will summon the white gorilla Mokk if you hand him 9 gorilla fangs. Kill Mokk, (beware his army,) and move on. Farther north, past the Zanzil camps and the basilisk cave is the Venture Co. mine along the ridges above the road. Kill goblins until you get all the drops you need. This is the one quest you might do without a group.
Across from the skullsplitter trolls on the west side of the road is an isolated hill on which the white tiger Bangalash lives. He has a few hidden cohorts as well. Kill him for Big Game Hunter. Back on the east side, more northward than the trolls, is the ogre camps. You'll need to kill random ogres to get the key for Cracking Maury's Foot. Mai'Zoth is in a cave in the north end of the ogre area, and is NOT easy to get to and kill. Unless you're much higher in level than the average Stranglethorn group, you'll need to have a strong balanced group and be on your toes. You can fight back out of the ogre cave if you like, but you're done now, so you might consider just using your hearthstone and turning in the rest of the quests you've finished.
Epilogue
The quests you have left, except Message in a Bottle, are not in SV. Whiskey Slim's Lost Grog is on the shores of Hinterlands, far to the north. Tran'rek and Stoley's Debt in Tanaris. The place you want to go next is Badlands. Badlands and its instance, Uldaman, are one of the prime targets at around level 40.
